The voluntary organizations in a democratic setup educate their members of social norms and objectives to reach their goals. There has been voluntary organizations for planned development in India since an early age.
For the first time Gandhiji used a 14 point constructive program to pick up the pace of the process of struggle for our independence. he was also very much concerned for the well being of underprivileged and so a program for them to activate their mass development economically and socially on the basis of self help through mutual help.

Shramdan, feevandan, to revolutionize the thinking process of the people in the society and bring about the feeling of sharing good things in life with the less fortunate once.
Similar is the example of 100% literacy rate in the state of Kerala is achieved by a voluntary organization. Many big leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Vinoba Bhave, Jaiprakash Narayan have appreciated and worked through the mode of voluntary organizations.
