Heavy rains kill 18 in Japan

Japan: The 18 confirmed deaths were largely in their 60s to 80s, together with nine at town of Hitoyoshi, eight at town of Ashikita, also one in Tsunagi, reports Xinhua news agency.

As flooding and mudslides cut roads and swept off buildings, over 2,000 families in eight municipalities stayed isolated on Sunday morning.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) requested citizens to stay awake as torrential rain is very likely to keep downpour in portions of western Japan during Tuesday.

The JMA increased heavy rain warnings from many elements of Kumamoto and nearby Kagoshima prefecture into the maximum degree on Saturday morning, the very first time it’s issued these high alarms for both prefectures.

According to the bureau, Amakusa at Kumamoto received recording precipitation of 98 mm each hour.

About 203,200 inhabitants from both prefectures were requested to take refuge.

Back in 17 municipalities at Kumamoto, 109 lands were opened to home at 871 evacuees.

Because of extensive flooding across the Kuma River, the prefectural authorities requested for the shipment of Earth Self-Defense Force employees for crisis relief work.

Rescuers struggled to get to the hard-hit regions across the river that broke its banks in several places early Saturday.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said in a crisis management interview Sunday that he needs rescue employees to do their utmost to aid people in misery and seek out people lost “throughout the night”.
