Manish Malhotra recalls styling Kajol on 25th DDLJ occasion

The all time blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) will be 25 years older on Tuesday, and also ace fashion designer Manish Malhotra, who created quite a couple of fashion trends in the movie, recalled working on the project.

When Adi (director Aditya Chopra) narrated the DDLJ script, then we went mad about it,” Malhotra remembered.

“Adi was very obvious that he wanted Kajol to become real, but yet there is a smart quotient to her, which synergy, I believe, came across strongly in DDLJ’s costumes which were relatable and yet there was something brand new and special about them.

I believe that is what stayed on with these figures. It had been real nevertheless it had a particular dreamy, specific aspirational and design element, and that worked,” the designer included.

Released on October 20, 1995, the amorous film starred Kajol together with Shah Rukh Khan, proceeded to become one of the most successful Indian films ever. The film is also remembered after all these years to get Jatin-Lalit’s songs.

“I think all characters were beautifully written. They’re young, they’re new, they were quite fresh for the simple fact that he (Aditya) desired Kajol to put on glasses, he wanted her moving on Euro rail — a conservative father allows her to do this.

For Shah Rukh, traveling to India to find the girl — there were so many top moments from the film, moments the youth correlated with. I believe Aditya has good understanding of the medium of filmmaking and what the crowd needs, and it had been fun working on this film,” Malhotra added.
