Sports Minister Remove salary cap of Rs 2 lakhs for Indian coaches training elite athletes.
The Sports Ministry on Saturday announced the doing away with the Rs 2 lakh limit on the wages given to Indian coaches training elite athletes in an attempt to motivate them to produce much better results and entice former players to become high performance coaches.
The announcement came following the ministry’s decision Thursday to extend the contracts of foreign coaches till September 30 next year and to make all future hiring — both Indian and foreign — to get a Faculties cycle in sync with the Olympics to guarantee continuity.
“Many Indian coaches are showing very good benefits and have to be rewarded for their work. The government is also eager to attract the very best coaching talent from throughout the nation to train elite athletes, and we don’t need to have the cap on reimbursement for a deterrent for great coaches to join,” Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said in a discharge.
“The higher remuneration and longer contract period will be also to attract ex-elite athletes to the high performance sporting ecosystem, and to use their expertise and ability to train athletes bound for major international competitions, including the Olympics.”

Eminent coaches currently functioning in several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) would also be permitted to join on deputation and be eligible for the 4-year contract as well as the higher salary arrangement.
The remuneration will be decided on the grounds of this ex-elite athlete’s performance as an athlete as well as her or his success as a trainer.
Welcoming the move, chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand said: “This is a long-standing request of the sporting fraternity. I am quite pleased with the choice since it is going to provide a terrific boost to the entire sporting ecosystem by attracting many gifted coaches and eminent ex-athletes to combine the profession”
The Sports Ministry may also restart grassroot-level talent scouting with a watch on 2028 Olympics if the situation arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic enhances.
