United Nations honored 5 Indians who died serving

The UN has honoured military lieutenant colonel who died while trying to save a fellow peacekeeper from drowning along with four other Indians in a ceremony honouring people who lost their lives while working on the world body this past year.

Speaking at the memorial ceremony on Tuesday, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated: “That so lots of our colleagues choose to serve where risk prevails is testament for their unstinting devotion to helping the world’s most vulnerable people, who rely upon us for peace, shelter, food, vaccinations and much more.”

The annual ceremony was held on the web since the UN headquarters is currently under a COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Atul Khare, said: “Our friends and colleagues paid the supreme sacrifice in the service of humankind.”

He said that their legacies “will live on as we take forward the noble cause of the UN”.

A total of 77 people, civilians and army personnel, who died last year while working on the UN, were honoured.

One of these, Lt Col Gaurav Solanki, died in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) while attempting to rescue a colleague out of drowing at Lake Kivu.

He had been a peacekeeper with the UN Stabilisation from the DRC, which can be well known by its French philosopher since MONUSCO.

They had previously acquired the UN”s Dag Hammarskjold decoration.

India’s Permanent Representative T.S. Tirumurti stated in May during the International Peacekeepers Day observance, “India’s long standing UN peacekeeping donation has not come without price. India has lost more peacekeepers than any other member nation of the UN.”
