Political condition in North India in the Post-Harsha period.

Harsha, vardhana’s empire had a lose structure and after his death even that disintegrated. In Kashmir Durlabhvardhan established Karakota dynasty. The attack of the Arabs was countered by his grandson Chandrapida.

King Bhaskarvarman ruled in Karnasuvanka in the Murshidabad district of Bengal and surrounding areas. Adityasena ruled in Magadha after the death of Harshavardhana.

Yashovarman came into power in Kannauj after 75 years of Harsha’s death. He subjugated Magadha and Gauda empires.

This period saw the emergence of stable state structure unlike the structure of the state during Harsha’s region. In Bengal the rise of ‘Palm’ marked a new phase in the political history of the region whereas in Western India like Gujarat and Rajasthan many royal families like the Gutjara, the Chauhans, Praiiharas, etc. emerged who too dominated political scenes for several years.to come.

After the decline of Gupta and Harsha dynasties the regional powers consolidated themselves and played significant roles in the history of medieval India.

The relation of Harsha with other powers.

Ans. Harsha came to power in 606 A.D. and immediately set off for a campaign against Gan as, from whom he saved his sister Rajyashri and also the kingdoms of Thaneshwar and Kannauj were combined. The details of his relationship with other contemporary Kingdoms were:

• He was the Icing of Magadha in 641 A.D. after becoming successful in his eastern campaigns.
• Harsha had diplomatic relations with the Chinese. He sent a Brahman envoy to China in 641 A.D.
• Valabhis remained a strong power during the period of Harsha. However, Harsha ended his enmity with Valabhis though matrimonial alliance.
• There was hostility between Vardhanas and Gurjaras of Gujarat.
• Pulakesin II, the Chalukya ruler carried military attack against Harsha Vardhana and was successful. Harsha inspite of several battles could not defeat him.

Harsha also fought Chalukyas in the Deccan. He also entered into an alliance with Bhaskarvarman. The king of Pragjyotishpur (Assam) as both were common enemy of Gauda (Bengal) King Sasanka.
